PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction regulating agent for lubricating oil exhibiting lowered shock in gear change and having improved torque transmission function. SOLUTION: The friction regulating agent for a lubricating oil is composed of an oil-soluble copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of≥3,000 and containing a unit of at least one monomer (a) expressed by general formula (1), CH<SB>2</SB>=C(R<SP>1</SP>)-Q-(Z-A<SP>1</SP>)<SB>m</SB>-X and a unit of at least one monomer (b) expressed by general formula (2), CH<SB>2</SB>=C(R<SP>3</SP>)-CO-(O-A<SP>2</SP>)<SB>n</SB>-OR<SP>4</SP>(X is PH<SB>2</SB>, NH<SB>2</SB>or (O)<SB>a</SB>-P(=O)<SB>b</SB>(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>2</SB>; one of (a) and (b) is 1 and the other is 0 or 1; R<SP>2</SP>is H, an alkyl or the like; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each H or methyl; Z is O or NH; A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each an alkylene; (m) is an integer of 0-50; Q is CO or a hydrocarbon group; (n) is an integer of 0-30; and R<SP>4</SP>is an alkyl or the like).
