PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape which excels in high-density characteristics and is adaptive to a recording capacity above 1 TB or more, and a magnetic tape cartridge. SOLUTION: A coated magnetic tape is set to≥0.05 to≤0.09μm in the thickness of a magnetic layer and is so constituted that the fluctuation in the reproduced output in at least either of the longitudinal direction and transverse direction of the tape when a signal of a wavelength 2μm is recorded by a magnetic induction recording head having a recording track width 76μm and is reproduced by a mageto-resistive reproducing head (the thickness of the magneto-resistive element: 0.05μm) having a track width 38μm is≤8%. Or the magnetic tape is set to≥0.01 to less than 0.05μm in the thickness of a magnetic layer and is so constituted that the fluctuation in the reproduced output in at least either of the longitudinal direction and transverse direction of the tape when a signal of a wavelength 2μm is recorded by the magnetic induction recording head having the recording track width 76μm and is reproduced by the mageto-resistive reproducing head (the thickness of the magneto-resistive element: 0.05μm) with the track width 38μm is≤10%.
