Benzene and/or one or more mono- or di-alkylbenzene with 2-9C atmos in the alkyl group are reacted with excess sulphuric acid at 60-80 degrees C until sulphonation is complete, a stoichiometric excess of toluene is added, the mixture heated under reflux until all the sulphuric acid has reacted, remaining water is distilled off azeotropically and finally the remaining toluene is distilled off under vacuum. The product contains 25-90% wt. toluenesulphonic acid and 10-75% of (mono- or dialkyl) benzene sulphonic acid and is useful as catalyst for polymerisation, alkylation and esterification, as a coupling agent and in detergents.
|
