PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent image persistence in a liquid crystal display device which utilizes a memory liquid crystal. SOLUTION: When writing a desired picture, each pixel is subjected to transition to a focal conic state or to a planar state on the basis of picture data. When a desired picture has been written and a specified period has passed, the picture data are converted with an NOT element and a picture is written on the basis of converted picture data. In this case, a pixel in the focal conic state is subjected to transition to the planar state and a pixel in the planar state is subjected to transition to the focal conic state. Thereafter, when a specified period has passed, again a desired picture is written on the basis of the picture data. Subsequently, similar operation is repeated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
