PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye causing no skin dyeing, applicable to a sensitive diathesis person unable to be hair-dyed with a conventional dye, settling irritation and injury on the scalp and the hair, obtaining fastness and hopeful about keeping dyeing effect obtaining a new hair texture, and to provide a hair-dyeing method using the dye. SOLUTION: The hair dye comprises, as essential ingredients, (A) one or more selected from prepared indigo leaves, settled indigo blue, indigo drydown leaves and and mixtures of two or more of these materials, (B) a reductant and (C) an alkali chemical, wherein 0.1-20 wt.% (A) reductant and 0.01-10 wt.% (B) alkali chemical are included based on the total dye weight. The method comprises treating with a mordant such as aluminum or iron, uniformly coating the dye itself or a mixture of the dye with a proper amount of water thereon, rinsing the hair and drying.
