The invention concerns a writing instrument comprising a liquid reservoir (3), a liquid spraying head (41), the spraying head being designed to spray the liquid from a distance on a writing surface (8), and a processing unit (6) designed to activate the spray head. The instrument further comprises measuring means (12) for measuring the distance between the spray head and the writing surface, and means for detecting a movement (14) of the spray head relative to the writing surface, the processing unit being adapted to control activation of the liquid spraying head when the measuring means determine that the distance between the spray head and the writing surface is less than a predetermined maximum value and the movement sensing means (14) detect a movement of the spray head relative to the writing surface.
