<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer which has a main chain lactone ring structure and can be rapidly and markedly enhanced in alkali solubility in the presence of a proton. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer (A) is produced by lacton cyclization of a polymer (a) obtained by polymerizing a monomer component essentially comprising α-(hydroxymethyl) acrylic ester.
