Production of a silica preform by deposition of superimposed silica-containing particle layers on the mantle surface of a carrier rotating about its longitudinal axis uses a group of burners oscillating parallel to this axis, the burners (9) in the rear group (23) which deposit the upper layer (6) reaching a higher flame temperature than do the burners (7) the front group (21).
