PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up total communication by making communication by picture data in a compressed state optimum for communication to be a basis and displaying compressed image data stored temporarily in a storage means, and confirming them when picture data are transmitted and received. SOLUTION: Picture data obtained by an image pickup means are stored temporarily in the storage means and are recorded in a recording medium. Picture data are transmitted to or received from an external apparatus through a communication line. A camera has a first mode where picture data are transmitted by a communication means after picture data recorded in a recording means are read into the storage means and a second mode where picture data are directly transmitted by the communication means after picture data obtained by the image pickup means are stored in the storage means.
