PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide free cutting tool steel having excellent machinability, mirror-finish characteristics and corrosion resistance and useful as a material for a plastic molding die. SOLUTION: The free cutting tool steel, which has a composition containing Fe as a principal component, containing, by mass, 0.001 to 0.4% C, 0.02 to 2% Si, 0.1 to 6% Ni, 0.1 to 10% Cr, 0.1 to 3% Al and≤0.7% Mn, containing Ti or/and Zr in amounts satisfying W<SB>Ti</SB>+0.52W<SB>Zr</SB>=0.03 to 1.2mass%, and also containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of S, Se and Te in an amount satisfying W<SB>S</SB>+0.4W<SB>Se</SB>+0.25W<SB>Te</SB>=0.01 to 0.4mass%, is provided.
