PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for picking up one printing plate from a stack of printing plates in an image forming system. SOLUTION: This device includes many of suction cups, a separator, a system for moving and pressing the suction cups and the separator on a surface of the printing plate on a top of the stack, a vacuum source for fixing the suction cup on the surface of the top printing plate by evacuating the suction cup, and a system for separating a part of the surface of the printing plate by moving the suction cup so as to rotate with respect to the separator. A center line of rotation of a moving system is positioned on a contact point between the separator and the surface of the top printing plate. Thereby, relative movement of the top printing plate of the stack with respect to a following printing plate below the top printing plate is prevented during a separation operation.
