PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide access to metadata describing the content or attributes of information material by an application programming interface. SOLUTION: The application programming interface is provided with a signaling protocol processor for receiving a metadata string which describes the content or attributes of the information material and includes a resource identifier indicating a position address of the metadata resource, and a file transfer processor for accessing the metadata resource upon a request from an application program.
