[Also in Division C3] Polymeric coatings on iron-containing substrates are formed by contacting said substrate with an aqueous solution of a monomeric N-3-oxohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamide of the formula wherein R and R 1 are each H or an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical containing up to 10 carbon atoms and R 2 is an ethylene radical or an alkyl-substituted ethylene radical having at least one alkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms on the carbon atom adjacent to the amide nitrogen atom, said solution having a pH in the range 1.0-6.0 and containing a water-soluble hydroperoxide, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide and 2,5-dimethylhexane-2,5- ,dihydroperoxide. The substrate may be of iron, steel or alloyed steel. (The iron present in the substrate is believed to form a redox catalyst system with the hydroperoxide.) The polymeric coating prevents the formation of rust on the substrate.</p> |
