1,155,799. Locking nuts and bolts. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. 26 March, 1968 [28 March, 1967], No. 14450/68. Heading F2H. A threaded fastener such as a screw 10 has a work clamping surface 16 on which teeth 18 are formed and a continuous ring 20, having a height greater than or equal to the height of the teeth, surrounds the teeth. The teeth are defined by gently sloping surfaces 22 and abrupt locking surfaces 24. The ring has a sharp edge and allows the screw to be initially tensioned in a member without interference from the locking teeth. Further tightening of the screw then allows the teeth to bite into the member. The surfaces 24 are radially positioned on the clamping surface but in a modification they are non-radially positioned. The locking teeth may also be used on nuts. The fastener may be formed of carbon steel wire and then hardened.
