Disclosed herein is a drain stop and overflow mechanism particularly well-suited for use with a free-standing bathtub. The overflow mechanism includes a drainpipe (62) that can be connected to a water drain opening (14) in the bathtub (12). A standpipe (38) can be connected at a bottom end to a waste water line (54) and also to the drainpipe (62). A sleeve (74) provides an internal overflow system within the standpipe (38), and a plunger (80) controlling drainage is positioned within the sleeve.
