PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize suppression of pseudo outlines of moving pictures as well as satisfactory gradation display in a picture display device using subfields. SOLUTION: An area having an inclination of gradation and a movement is detected from a picture signal, and a prescribed gradation of the picture signal is corrected to another one in accordance with the extent and the direction of the movement and the degree and the direction of the inclination of gradation in the area, and intermediate non-lit subfields which cause a pseudo outline of a moving picture are dispersed to perform picture display with the pseudo outline of the moving picture suppressed.
