PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid-crystal composition which has high voltage retention, a wide liquid-crystal temperature range, low viscosity and high▵n and shortens the transition time from spray alignment to bend alignment specific to OCB liquid crystal and an OCB liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: The liquid-crystal composition which comprises a compound represented by formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-15C alkyl group, a 2-15C alkenyl group or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>is COO, CH<SB>2</SB>O, CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>, CH=CH, C≡C, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>4</SB>, CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-CH=CH, single bond or the like; m is 0, 1 or 2; X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>are each H, F or Cl; Q<SP>1</SP>is OCH<SB>2</SB>, OCF<SB>2</SB>, OCHF, CF<SB>2</SB>or a single bond; Y<SP>1</SP>is F or Cl) and a compound is represented by formula (2)(R<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>5</SP>-X<SP>10</SP>are each as shown for R<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>1</SP>, Q<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>and at least three of X<SP>5</SP>-X<SP>10</SP>is F or Cl) and has≥75°C upper limit temperature of a nematic phase and≤-10°C nematic lower limit temperature and 0.13-0.35 anisotropy of refractive index is used.
