PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a liquid crystal display element of vertical orientation type by which disclination is suppressed and a high contrast and high resolution image is displayed. SOLUTION: In a driving pulse train for expressing gradation of a liquid crystal display element by applying a voltage to a liquid crystal in the liquid crystal display element, one field period of this pulse train is structured with a plurality of sub-fields comprising a non-display period that does not drive the liquid crystal and a display period that drives the liquid crystal. Then, an image is displayed by applying a prescribed voltage to the liquid crystal for each sub-field combination selected in accordance with the gradation, in the method for driving the vertical orientation type digital liquid crystal display element. In this case, the ratio of the sum of the display periods of each sub-field to the one field period is set in the range not less than 1:6 and not more than 5:6. The liquid crystal is driven by applying a saturation driving voltage to the liquid crystal in this display period. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
