The method involves the engine controller varying the engine torque to damp mechanical oscillations in the drive train. A threshold value or several threshold values dependent on the instantaneous operating state for maximum engine movement is/are stored in the engine controller to enable read-out. If the maximum movement is exceeded, operating parameters are weighted and the torque reduced until the movement is below the threshold.
