The first and second phase plates (3, 13) have slow axes parallel and perpendicular to the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules. The product of the index of refraction n of the liquid crystal layer multiplied by the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer, the phase difference R1 of the first phase plate, and the phase difference R2 of the second phase plate satisfy at least one of the relationships below. 530 nm &lt;= Deltand + R1 + R2 &lt;= 570 nm, -20 nm &lt;= Deltand - R1 - R2 &lt;= 20 nm, 255 nm &lt;= Deltand - R1 + R2 &lt;= 295 nm, 255 nm &lt;= Deltand + R1 - R2 &lt;= 295 nm.
