A method for fitting ballast weights to a mobile crane has some of the ballast weights (5) permanently fitted to the bottom end of the telescopic boom (10) and the remainder of the ballast (5') mounted on a storage platform (4) on the chassis of the vehicle for a stable support for road travel. To assemble the full ballast weights the top part of the crane is swivelled through 180 deg. to align the weights over each other. The bottom ballast weights (5') are stacked on a storage platform mounted on the chassis and comprising parallel support beams. A lifting platform attached to the swivel mounted top frame slides under the support plate during the swivel action and has a slotted structure to lift up through the storage platform to clamp the bottom ballast weights to the boom.
