PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for updating a pronouncing dictionary are provided to improve recognition speed by preventing unnecessary sequence from generating, and improve the recognition performance. CONSTITUTION: A multiple pronunciation sequence generator(110) receives text data type words for generating and outputting a plurality of pronunciation sequences corresponding to the words. A sound character converter(130) receives the plurality of pronunciation sequences for converting the plurality of pronunciation sequences into sound characters. A multiple pronunciation sequence selecting unit(150) receives the sound characters for suggesting at least one or more sound characters to a user, and receives a sound character selecting signal for selecting the sound character corresponding to the selecting signal and converting the same into pronunciation sequence to transmit the pronunciation sequence to a pronouncing dictionary.
