PURPOSE: To prevent a light leak in black display and to enhance contrast while ensuring a high transmittance by expansion of a transmission display area in a reflective-transmission combined liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal layer 6 is held between a pair of substrates 1, 5 has a transmission display area B in which display is performed with transmitted light and a reflective display area A in which display is performed with reflected light, wherein the substrate 1 has an insulating smoothing layer 15 which eliminates level difference due to a signal line 4 for supplying a signal to a driver 13 and/or a gate line and a transparent electrode 16 formed on the layer 15 in the transmission display area B.
