PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for restricting discharge current of an electric vehicle are provided to prevent a damage of a battery by managing the current limit of the battery according to states of the battery, a temperature condition of a regenerative braking operation, a condition of an output voltage, and a temperature condition of a battery pack. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for restricting discharge current of an electric vehicle includes a main battery(10), a BMS(Battery Management System)(20), a contactor(30), and a motor controller(40). The main battery(10) is used as a main power source. The BMS(20) controls a motor(50) and produces a SOC(State Of Charge) and the capacity of the main battery(10) according to a current value detected from the main battery(10). In addition, the BMS(20) manages the maximum allowable discharge current value according to a state of the main battery(10) and sets up a current limit value according to the temperature and the output voltage. The contactor(30) is used for supplying the voltage of the main battery(10) to the motor(50). The motor controller(40) is used for controlling the torque and the driving speed of the motor(50).
