PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to realize a passivation film and a black matrix at the same time by using an opaque organic material without forming an extra passivation film for protecting thin film transistors. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of gate lines(102) and a plurality of data lines(116) are formed to cross each other on a substrate for defining pixel areas. Thin film transistors are formed at cross points of the gate lines and the data lines, and include gate electrodes(104), active layers(108), source and drain electrodes(112,114). Black matrices(120) are located on the thin film transistors, the data lines, and the gate lines. The black matrices are made of an opaque organic film exposing parts of the drain electrodes. A first transparent electrode layer(126) which contacts with the exposed drain electrodes is formed on a front surface of the substrate. Color filters(128a,128b) are formed on the first transparent electrode layer. A second transparent electrode layer(130) is formed on the front surface of the substrate, contacting with a part of the first transparent electrode layer. The first transparent electrode layer and the second transparent electrode layer are patterned at the same time to form an independently patterned transparent electrode at every pixel area.
