Electric cells having an inert cathode and an electropositive metal anode have as electrolyte a solution of a halogen or pseudo-halogen in a liquid amine. Anodes may be of Li, K, Ba, Sr, Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Zn, Cd, Sn or amalgams or alloys of Mg, Cd, Zn or Al; cathodes may be of Pt or C; liquid amines may be pyridine, piperazine, piperidine, pyrrollidine 3-picoline or tetramethylethylenediamine. Cells exemplified have Pt cathodes, electrolytes of pyridine/I 2 and anodes of Mg, Zn, Al or Sn.
