1,161,768. Tubular heat exchangers. GOTAVERKEN A.B. 11 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 45376/66. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger enclosed within a jacket 1, finned tubes 13, through which flow a cooling medium such as sea water, extend between two collecting chambers and are divided into groups by radial baffle plates 14 which guide a medium to be cooled, e.g. engine oil, transversely in a sinuous path over the tube groups, the flow entering and leaving the heat exchanger through connections 15, 16 respectively. Alternate plates 14a extend from the jacket 1 and intervening plates 14b extend from the centre of the exchanger. Walls 17, 18 and 24 subdivide the collecting chambers to provide a four-pass flow of the medium to be cooled through the tubes. When it is desired to reduce the cooling capacity of the exchanger, a number of tubes on both sides of baffle plates 14 within a sector 31 are removed and the zones formerly occupied by the tubes are fitted with cover-plates of suitable shape. The cross-section of exchanger jacket 1 may be circular (as shown), rectangular or polygonal.
