[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where m is 1 or 2, n is 1-3 and A 1 and A 2 are residues of compounds of the formula where X is 0 or S, Z 1 and Z 2 are H or together form a single bond, Z 3 and Z 4 are H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy of 1-6 carbon atoms, hydroxy, carboxy or optionally substituted phenyl and p and q are 1 or 2, and their water-soluble salts, quaternary ammonium compounds and products obtained by their subsequent sulphonation or treatment with formaldehyde dimethylol urea or polymethylol melamine optionally followed by neutralization. The compounds are prepared by treating one or more compounds of Formula II with a sulphonating agent until the condensation product contains at least one atom of sulphur in the form of a sulphonyl group and at least one in the form of a sulphonic acid group. The mixture to be sulphonated may include an aromatic hydrocarbon optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms or alkoxy or hydroxy radicals.
