<p>A variable position component (4) for adjusting the stroke of each valve (2) is guided into a cylinder head (CH). An intermediate component (5) is supported and pivotably guided on the variable position component. The cam (11) of a camshaft (1) is supported in a fixed manner within the cylinder head such that the intermediate component engages the cam and a stroke-transmitting arrangement (3). The valve actuating system includes the camshaft rotatably supported in the cylinder head such that the camshaft can be fixed in a position relative to the valves and the associated stroke-transmitting arrangements. The stroke-transmitting arrangement is guided in a fixed position and associated with each valve.</p>
