摘要 Alcohols are obtained from C10- 30 normal saturated hydrocarbons, which contain 0.2-10% by wt. of aromatic hydrocarbons, by oxidation with molecular oxygen at 145-175 DEG C. in the presence of orthoboric acid, or a dehydrated form thereof, hydrolysing the reaction mixture residue and recovering alcohol therefrom, the boron compound being added in a finely divided solid form in a total amount equivalent in terms of B to at least 1 mol. orthoboric acid per 3 mols. product alcohol, and the addition thereof being controlled so that the maximum amount of total boron compounds present at any time during the course of the reaction per 100 gms. hydrocarbon substrate and per 100 milli-mols. of contained oxygenated organic compound is equivalent in terms of B to 200-22 milli-mo's. orthoboric acid. This maximum amount of boron is highest for the lowest aromatic content of the hydrocarbon substrate and lowest for the highest aromatic content. If selectivity to alcohol, based on hydrocarbon converted, is about 70%, 2C.4140 at least about 0.25 mol. orthoboric or metaboric acid per mol. hydrocarbon converted should be used; preferably 0.4 or 0.5 mol. acid is used. An oxidation initiator, e.g. a peroxy compound, may be included in the reaction mixture. Unreacted hydrocarbon and non-alcoholic oxidation products may be recovered before hydrolysis and recycled. Orthoboric acid recovered from the hydrolysis stage may be reused, preferably after dehydration. Examples relate to the oxidation of a mixture of C11- 14 n-paraffins containing 3% aromatics.
