The present invention is concerned with a superconducting fault current limiter comprising a composite consisting of high-temperature superconductor layer (11) and electrical bypass layer (12), and a thermal barrier (3) provided between the conductor and surrounding cooling fluid (4). The transfer of the heat generated in the composite during a fault event is delayed and smoothed, thus preventing the creation of shock or pressure waves in the cooling fluid.
