[Also in Division B5] A packing element for material-exchange columns comprises contacting layers, at least alternate layers being grooved, as shown in Figure 1, and each layer comprises a non- self-supporting sheet 1 with a reinforcement formed by two groups of parallel, spaced wires, the wires of the first group 2 being disposed transversely of the wires of the second group 3 which, as shown in the figure, are inserted in the bottoms 4a of the grooves 4 on the other surface of the sheet and are interconnected with the wires 2 by spot welding through the sheet at the points of intersection 5. Further reinforcement may be provided by a group of wires 6 placed in the bottoms of the grooves 4 of the wires 2 and directly connected thereto by spot welding at the points of intersection 7. The sheet may be an open-mesh textile fabric, a glass fibre fabric or a woven fabric of asbestos, conventional natural or synthetic textile fibres or a plastics film. |
