A metallic transport and storage container (1), for heat producing radioactive material, e.g. spent nuclear reactor fuel elements, comprises a metallic carrier basket (2) with receiving members (3) for the radioactive material, and an externally oxidized edge profile between the container wall (5) and the basket. The profile comprises a heat conducting metal, and the oxide coating (7) is artificially formed and is at least 10 micron thick. Preferred Features:The edge profile is made of aluminum, an aluminum alloy, copper and/or copper alloys.
