The steering column (2) has a shaft (10) for a steering wheel (3), with the shaft set in a bearing (14). The bearing is retained on the shaft by one or more radial projections (28) formed on one side of the bearing by material of the shaft that is forced in an axial direction so that it expands radially. The projections, created e.g. by a series of punches, are made all round the shaft on one side of the bearing, holding it against a shoulder on the opposite side.
