Method to operate a direct injection internal combustion engine

The internal combustion engine (1) receives air through an inlet manifold (2) and has a connection (9) with a control computer (7). The computer receives inputs (8) from temperature sensors upstream (5) and downstream (6) of the catalytic converter (4) in the exhaust pipe (3). The control computer arranges a second injection of fuel during the power stroke when the temperature reading from the catalytic converter reaches a given threshold. The amount of extra fuel injected depends on the temperature reading.
