1,265,354. Sulphonated polymers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 26 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968; 7 Oct., 1968; 4 March, 1969], No. 15831/69. Heading C3P. Polymers containing ethylenic unsaturation are dissolved or dispersed in a suitable solvent or diluent and reacted with a complex prepared by reacting a Lewis base containing nitrogen, phosphorus or oxygen and a sulphur trioxide donor to produce a polymer having a sulphonation level of 0À08 to 20 mole per cent. The polymers can then be further reacted with sodium hydroxide or sodium acetate. Polymers exemplified are butyl rubber, chlorinated butyl rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polyisobutylene and EPDM rubber. The complex may be made by reacting sulphur trioxide with triethyl phosphate, tetrahydrofuran, dioxan, di(chloroethyl) ether or triethylamine. The sulphonated polymers containing high unsaturation may then be sulphur-cured using conventional recipes. |
