A hand wheel actuator (10) having a stationary hub (15) is provided by a housing (30) supporting a first shaft (71, 81) via bearings (21) such that it is rotatable about its own axis. The first shaft (71, 81) has an upper end configured for attaching a hand wheel (12). The actuator (10) also includes a position sensor (39) for detecting an angular displacement of the first shaft (71, 81) from a selected origin and producing a signal indicative of said angular displacement and an electric motor (40) in operative communication with the first shaft (71, 81) for providing feedback to a driver. A steering post (25) is maintained in a fixed position with respect to the housing (30) for maintaining the hub (15) in a fixed position centrally of said hand wheel (12), so that the hub (15) faces the driver when said hand wheel (12) is operated. The steering post (25) extends along an axis of rotation of the hand wheel (12) and through the first shaft (71, 81), which is fixed to the hand wheel (12) and rotates therewith. <IMAGE> |
