The fastening of workpiece or tool (15) in holding device (1) having tool gripping (4) and mounting (5) heads has the item to be gripped fastened in position by a self locking collet (2) being drawn in the axial direction into tapered bore (13) in the gripping head. The workpiece is first positioned in the gripping head, the holding device being placed in chucking bench (24). A hydraulic nut (3) in the bench is used to draw the workpiece into position. The angle of the tapered bore and collet is selected so that after the collet has been drawn into the bore its self locking properties will hold it fast, with the surface hardness of the collet being greater than that of the bore.
