Esters of a , b -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids are purified from carbonyl-group containing compounds by treatment with ammonia, an ammonium compound, an amine or an amine salt and the complex formed is separated from the ester. Esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids with aliphatic monohydric alcohols of 1-8 C atoms are referred to and ammonium salts such as the hydroxide, chloride, sulphate, nitrate and acetate, and #s-phenylenediamine, hydroxylamine, semicarbazide, hydrazine, 2, 4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine and phenyl hydrazine and mineral salts thereof may be used. Examples describe the extraction of methyl acrylate prepared from b -propiolactone and methyl alcohol. An inhibitor such as hydroquinone may be present, and the process may be continuous. |
