A battery powered device, such as a radio receiver, having a stage (16) for processing a signal. A user can control the useful life of a battery by selecting between a process providing a higher quality output at the expense of a higher current consumption and at least one lower quality output using lesser current. The stage (16) may include the options (20 to 28) of selecting a number of Rake fingers and/or various qualities of signal equalisation. In an alternative application, such as an MPEG3 player (Figure 7-not shown) a signal reproduced from a file may be processed to enhance the reproduced audio signal. Any one of the various methods of enhancement requiring greater/lesser levels of current consumption may be selected by a user.
