In a method of feeding blanks from a start position to a work position in a machine tool the feed is effected by a feed element which moves along a cycloidal path defined by the continuous and slipless rolling of a circle around another circle, the start positions and work positions occurring at reversal points in the cycloidal path. A device for effecting this feed motion is in the form of an epicyclic gear assembly in which a feed element 9 is mounted on a planet gear 7 supported on a planet carrier 4, the driven rotation of the carrier 4 produces rotation of the gear 7 and hence the arm of the feed element 9 the path traced by the end of the feed element being that of a hypocycloid C produced by the rolling of a circle A on the inside of a base circle B as shown particularly in Fig. 2. This motion produces at the reversal points D, D1, D2, &c., of the hypocycloid, a momentary static condition of the feed element which facilitates shockless engagement or disengagement with the blanks. In a modification the device may operate in co-operation with a rotary part or rotor of the machine tool so that the rolling action of the planet gear produces a hypocyclic path of the feed element 9 by movement around the inside of the base circle B having start positions 14 thereon, and an epicyclic motion of the feed element around the outside of the base circle F formed by the rotary part of the machine and having work positions 13 thereon. The transfer positions occur at the positions 13 and 14 and by maintaining a specific speed relationship between the planet gear and the rotary part blanks may be loaded and unloaded successively in the work position B of the machine tool. In a further modification two feed elements may be used carried on planet gears with centres of rotation spaced apart so that successive elements can load and unload blanks from any given position. Also, a plurality of rotary parts or rotors may be mounted on one shaft in the machine tool and the blanks transferred by the feed members from one position on one rotor to a position on another rotor. |
