In a metal shear, a work support acts also as a fixed blade with which a movable cutter cooperates and there are means for holding down the work and for compressing it at right angles to the cutting plane. As shown, Fig. 1, a cutter 3 is reciprocable by means of a piston 2 movable in cylinder 1 and actuated by hydraulic fluid supplied through inlet 10 which communicates with an impact hydraulic pressure generator (not shown) such as a hydropunch. An exhaust outlet 12 leads from the exhaust side 11 of the portion. The cutter is also reciprocable by means of a rod 8 which is preferably fluid-operated. A work support 4 also acts as the lower cutting blade. A hold-down 30 and a member 50 for exerting a compressive force axially of a workpiece 27 have similar hydraulic operating mechanisms in communication with the impact generator. In use, the operating rods 8, 35, 55 are actuated to retract the cutter 3, hold down 30 and compression member 50 and their respective pistons fully. A workpiece is placed on the support 4 and the rods 8, 35, 55 are actuated to move the parts 3, 30 and 50 into engagement with the workpiece. Fluid is then supplied to move pistons 2, 33 and 53 into contact with the parts 3, 30 and 50 respectively. High energy cutting then takes place due to pressure from the hydropunch via the passages 10, 38, 58, the relative lengths of which are such that the hold down 30 is actuated first, then the compression member 50 and finally the cutter 3. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, detachable weights 68 for varying the mass and thus the speed of the cutter head 69 are provided.</p> |
