The invention relates to a gas chromatograph, in which the substances of a mixture of substances to be analysed are metered and conducted through a separation device. At the end of the latter, the separated substances that are present are recorded by means of a detector and are at least partially identified in a quantitative manner using the detector signals supplied by the detector. To optimise the analysis of complex mixtures of substances by gas chromatography, the mixture (1) of substances is conducted in a non-destructive manner through at least one additional detector (15; 16) that is positioned in-line in the course of the separation device (5), said detector generating additional detector signals (18; 19) in accordance with substances of the mixture (1) that are completely separated at this point and at least part of the substances that have been completely separated by the time they reach the additional detector (15; 16) are quantitatively identified using the additional detector signals.
