The preparation and recycling of the regenerating solution, in which deleterious organic materials are adsorbed from the water by the carbon, by solubilising the adsorbed material in the moist exhausted carbon by sulphonation in known manner with sulphuric acid or other sulphonating agents, whereby the carbon is re-used after washing, while the acid regeneration liquor is concentrated by evporation, wholly or partly freed from the thereby precipitated organic material and/or by oxidation in known manner, and finally recycled. sulphuric acid of at least 5% concentration and preferably 60-100% is used at a temperature of over 60 degrees C. and preferably 100-150 degrees C. the heat of dilution of the acid being utilised for the reaction.
