[Also in Division B5] Apparatus 74 for severing a standing tree 45 comprises two cutting blades 96, 97 pivotable between open, Fig. 5 (not shown), and closed, Fig. 4, positions, about support shafts 88, 89. The severing assembly 74 is bolted (79), Fig. 2 (not shown), above a bottom plate 75 of a mast 32. Vertical plates 83, 84 depending from a horizontal plate 82 with a curved edge 82a form a mounting for the shafts 88, 89 about which structures carrying the cutting blades 96, 97 may pivot, each structure including a clevis pivot bracket 111 connected to a hydraulic actuator 112 pivoted to a mast bracket 116, 117. The actuators 112 close the blades 96, 97 around the tree 45 to sever it, the blades overlapping slightly in the closed position. After severing, the tree may be clamped 48 and lowered to the ground by a supporting vehicle-mounted hydraulic boom assembly, Fig. 1, with the lower end supported by retaining plates 103, 104 incorporated in the blade-carrying structure. A known delimbing and clamping assembly 48 is provided.</p> |
