Apparatus for supporting a horizontal brush for a vehicle washing apparatus comprises an inclined frame 14 pivoted about a horizontal axis 15 on side frames 10; a sub-frame 19 mounting a brush 13 and its electric motor driving means 20, 21, 22 and fitted with rollers 23, 24 which run on guides 25 provided at each side of the frame 14; and an hydraulic piston and cylinder device 35 for moving the frame 14 into a reversely inclined position, Fig. 4 (not shown). Initially, the brush 13 is in the position shown by the broken lines in Fig. 2, but when the front of a vehicle is urged from the left of the Figure against the brush the brush begins to ascend the guides 25 aided by counterweights 27, thus maintaining intimate contact with the vehicle. When the brush reaches the roof of the vehicle the actuating rod 46 of an electric limit switch 45 is displaced by the front edge of the vehicle roof: The switch 45 is in an electric circuit with a limit switch (49) Fig. 3 (not shown), having an arm (50) contacted by the vehicle for opening the switch 49. When both switches are closed the circuit is operated to actuate the device 35 which reverses the inclination of the frame 14. Thereafter the brush moves, under gravity down the frame 14 until the vehicle has cleared the apparatus. As the vehicle clears the apparatus an electric switch 47 is operated whereby the device 35 is caused to return the frame to its original position. During this movement guide wheels 42 on the brush shaft move along rails 43 on the side frames 10. The apparatus may be static or movable relative to a vehicle, and is used. in combination with vertical rotary brushes for cleaning the vehicle sides, in known manner.</p> |
