PURPOSE: A video display device having external input terminals used in common and a method for controlling therefor are provided to reduce the manufacturing cost and a space of an external equipment connecting unit. CONSTITUTION: At least one or more external input terminals(P1,P2) receive component video signals and composite video signals from an external device. A discriminating unit(105) confirms the component video signals and the composite video signals inputted through the external input terminals for discriminating kinds of the video signals. A control unit(110) separates brightness signals and color signals from the composite video signals to display the separated signals on a display unit(145) if the video signals are the composite video signals.
