The furnace comprises a susceptor manufactured from an alloy including niobium, hafnium and titanium. The susceptor is disposed within an induction coil 6 of the furnace. Preferably the susceptor is cylindrically shaped and approximately 4 m in length and having an internal diameter of 0.5m and an external diameter of 0.52m. The cylinder may be manufactured out of the alloy or from a refractory material such as a high purity of alumina and with its inner surface lined with the alloy. The cylinder is held between two annular plates 2, 3 and the induction coil is preferably 2m in length. The coil may have a steel cover 7 so that a gas-tight space surrounding the furnace chamber 8 can be filled with an inert gas or nitrogen. A helical protrusion 9 may be integrally formed with the inner surface of the cylinder for assisting the movement of material being heat treated. Preferably the furnace is rotated on bearings, and rolling seals and air locks are also fitted at both ends of the furnace. Ideally this type of furnace is used for the disposal of waste materials or roasting of ores and minerals.
