A continuous filament, tow or yarn is wound onto a former and simultaneously metal-coated electrolytically while pressure is applied to the fibre by a porous member, e.g. a roller or endless belt, to avoid the protruding of broken ends. The former and the roller(s) may be immersed in the electrolytic bath. Preferably the electrolyte is passed to the interior of the roller(s) so as to wet the fibres. One electrode may be mounted within the roller(s). The current for electrolytic depositor may be periodically reversed to influence the properties of the finish. Winding is carried out by rotating the former and traversing the fibre, the rate of traverse and the speed of rotation being controlled. Preferably a tow is used which is passed over a convex surface prior to winding to spread the fibres.
|
