[Also in Division B1] A palladium metal catalyst is prepared by reducing a palladium compound on a support by the action of one or more hydrocarbons at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100‹ to 600‹ C. Olefins such as ethylene, propene and butene are preferably used. Suitable supports include silica, silicates, calcined aluminium oxide and spinels. The catalysts may also include alkali metal salts, silver or gold. Examples describe the preparation of catalysts comprising palladium supported on a lithium/aluminium spinel and including sodium acetate, and palladium supported on silica and including gold and potassium acetate, and their use in the preparation of vinyl acetate from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen. |
